Minnesota - what they tell you vs. reality

I love living in Minnesota.  I came up here in 2002 and planned to stay for 11 months to do AmeriCorps.  That was ten years ago.

Things Minnesotans tell friends and family so you'll come visit us:
It's gorgeous here.  The nature is beautiful.

The lakes are beautiful.  Of course they're warm enough for swimming.

Like to walk and hike?  We've got that.  Bikes?  Tons of places for that too.

Minnesota means "sky tinted waters".  That's our name for a reason.

Every day is a different adventure.  We have lots to do here.

This is the Minnesota we show you when you come visit.   There's an ugly underbelly that we don't like to show.

Truth: We're just like you.

The whole state is being repaved.  Except for the bike lane on the River Lake Greenway.  And by "bike lane" they mean "the most chewed up piece of road we could find; even the cars won't ride here".

They're also digging.  I was hoping for treasure; all I got was a ten foot deep hole in the street.

And there's no way to get around it.  Ever.
